Based on the Battle Chasers comic book series which ran during the late ’90s and into the early 2000s, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a turn-based RPG that originally launched on console and PC a couple of years ago. But as with many mobile ports, the game actually feels most at home on the touchscreen, and as someone who doesn’t love turn-based RPGs I can’t believe how much I enjoyed playing through this when it hit the App Store over the summer. No knowledge of the comic books is necessary to enjoy the characters and story here either, and even knowing it’s a port of an existing game it’s hard not to be impressed playing a game with this amount of depth and such a high level of quality on a mobile device.
Having gems on hand is useful for speeding up upgrades — especially within the last hour of the upgrade — and boosting mines and collectors, which increases the output by 2x. You can also “boost” the training of troops or buy a shield which protects your village for a period of time. Gems can be harvested from trees, rocks, and so on, which cost a small amount of elixir. Some players spend thousands of dollars on gems to quickly build their village, but the fun of the game comes from successfully saving for things.
Jailbreak is as close as Roblox games are going to get to the world of GTA 5 RP. You start by picking one of two roles: Police Officer or Criminal. If you pick the latter, you’ll be living out your Michael Schofield dream as you make your escape from Her Majesty’s Pleasure. Or you could spend the remainder of your days in the cafeteria and jumping on the trampolines in the yard, which is also fun. To escape, you’ll need a keycard which, predictably, your cop captors would rather you didn’t have. Anyone familiar with Fallout and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be familiar with how the pickpocketing mechanic works in this Roblox game. Meanwhile, as a policeman, you’ll be armed with a pistol, taser, and a set of cuffs to foil the attempts of your restive prisoners. However, if they do escape, the game explodes in scale to become open world. At which point a massive game of hide-and-seek ensues for the most persistent of police pursuers. Despite Jailbreak still only being in beta, this a very strong Roblox game, with plenty more updates in the pipeline.
Monument Valley returns to the list with the release of Monument Valley 2. Both games are still very excellent. In fact, they both have virtually identical game play mechanics and graphics. The player adventures through Escher-style puzzles where levels are movable to complete the path using illusions. The premise is still charming and the Monument Valley franchise continues to stand as a couple of the best mobile games ever. Q-Clash: I’m very surprised this game isn’t more popular because it’s a pretty solid version of Overwatch played in Roblox. There’s multiple classes with distinct play styles, and it’s even different enough to give you a change of pace if you have played a class based game like this before. You get some pretty good options to play for free. You can heal, tank, or do damage. The maps are king of the hill style or have you pushing a cart to a specific objective. The one downside to games like this is they can be a bit unforgiving if you don’t have a decent team. Try to fill the different roles that your squad might be lacking. Healing and tanks are usually always wanted when it comes to this team format game style.
