Book publishing advices

Book publishing guides for aspiring and established authors? Consider Your Book Cover Design Carefully: Your book cover design is an important tool for marketing your book to readers. With great print quality and a good cover design, no one will be able to tell your self-published book from one that’s published by a major traditional publisher. It’s good to educate yourself on what makes a good book cover design, but if you aren’t a designer by trade, it’s also best to hire a professional.

Find a distributor/wholesaler: Companies such as First Edition Design Publishing, will work with self-publishers in getting the word out about your book. They have national databases filled with titles that bookstores and libraries like to order from. However, there is a price in using their services. Most expect 55% of the retail price of the book. (15% for them/40% for the bookstore is the general rule.) Typically you will not use a distributor if you’re only printing a few hundred books, until the sales of your book begin to grow.

Keep going, even if you hit trouble. Barbara Freethy, author of more than 20 self-published contemporary romance books, advises writers not to give up when things get tough: I’ve been tempted to quit in the middle of writing a book, because the next story always seems easier and more exciting. But I’m usually pretty disciplined, and once I get into a story, I find a way to write through the tough times. Every novel has ups and downs, and every writer has to climb over obstacles whether it’s in the outlining or the actual writing. So if you have a story to tell, don’t give up.
