Bali is a fabulous location, so much colour, a must see for any travel fan. About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot (“Pura” means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali’s most iconic temples thanks to its spectacular seaside setting on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves. For the Balinese people, it is one of the most sacred of all the island’s sea temples. (The largest and holiest Hindu temple in Bali is Pura Besakih, but recently local hagglers have been harassing visitors.) Every evening, throngs of tourists from Kuta, Legian, and Sanur find their way through a labyrinth of lanes lined by souvenir sellers to watch the sun setting behind the temple. Pura Tanah Lot was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is thought to be inspired by the priest Nirartha, who asked local fishermen to build a temple here after spending the night on the rock outcrop.
If Gili T is too busy for your tastes, you’ll feel much more at home on Gili Meno. The smallest of the three islands, Gili Meno attracts an older, more upmarket crowd. It’s the one you’ll want to spend the most time on if you’re on your honeymoon. The beaches are stunning (and more consistent than the other two islands) and there are some cool places to eat and drink. Again, there’s not much to do but that’s kind of the point. Besakih Temple (also called Pura Besakih) is the most sacred Hindu temple in Bali. An important place of pilgrimage for devotees, the magnificent temple sits on the slopes of the volcanic Mount Agung. Split between six terraced levels, the complex is made up of more than 20 individual, but associated, temples. A spiritual Hindu site for at least 2,000 years, it is widely believed that the area has been a holy place since the prehistoric period. There are many fascinating shrines throughout the stunning complex along with a wealth of interesting architecture. Some 70 religious festivals take place at the temple every year.
Bali is known for its spa experiences which blend traditional local ingredients and centuries old techniques that will leave you relaxed and rejuvenated. One of the most amazing of all Bali’s spas is The Spa and The Edge Hotel which is located in Pectau and sits on the side of a cliff. This means that you get views over the water and can look over a sheer drop down the cliff side and the packages here mix flowers, rice, and holy water for one of the best spa experiences on the island.
Gili Air is a fair bit smaller and more refined compared to Gili Trawangan. Compared to both Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno, it is safe to say that Gili Air offers the best of both worlds and is the second most popular island to head to after the more established Gili Trawangan.
