One of Odisha’s top attractions, mangroves of Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary are home to the largest population of endangered saltwater crocodiles in India. There are more than 1,600 of them, including the world’s largest crocodile, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It is a massive 23 feet long! Take a boat trip through the mangroves to see pilgrimage crocodiles on the marshes. Please note that the sanctuary is closed from 1 July 31 of each year for the breeding season. While Moharli has always been the most popular area for safaris, there have been many sightings of tigers in the Kolsa area in 2017. Note that the doors are all far apart, so be sure to take this into account when booking your accommodation. Pick somewhere in the vicinity of the door you will enter through. The reserve also includes six buffer zones where ecotourism activities (conducted by villagers) and safaris take place. They are Agarzari, Devada-Adegoan, Junona, Kolara, Ramdegi-Navegaon and Alizanza.
